Seeking Allah's Mercy: Dua for Protection from Excessive Rain and Floods

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1013

O Allah, let it be around us and not upon us. O Allah, let it be on the hills, on the mountains, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow.

Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'ala al-akami wa adh-dhirabi, wa butoon al-awdiyati, wa manabit ash-shajari.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when there is excessive rain that has become a cause for concern, such as the fear of floods or destruction. It's a supplication to redirect the heavy rainfall to areas where it would be beneficial, like hills and valleys where water is needed for agriculture and vegetation, and away from populated areas or places prone to damage.

How to Read

This dua should be recited with sincerity and a hopeful heart, acknowledging Allah's power over all natural events. It reflects a deep reliance on Him and a request for His mercy to avert harm. Raising hands can be part of this supplication, as is customary in seeking Allah's help.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua demonstrates Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and recognizes that He is the one who controls the weather. By asking for the rain to be around us and not upon us, we seek to benefit from its blessings without suffering its destructive potential. It also teaches us to pray for the land's well-being, which supports life and sustenance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The people invoked the rain (during the time of the Prophet) when it rained on the day (of Friday). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "This is a recent occasion." Anas then said: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah for rain when there was a need. When the rain was too much, he would say: 'Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'ala al-akami wa adh-dhirabi, wa butoon al-awdiyati, wa manabit ash-shajari' (O Allah, let it be around us and not upon us. O Allah, let it be on the hills, on the mountains, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow)." Sahih al-Bukhari 1013.
