How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would often raise his hands when making dua for rain. This practice is recommended. It's also important to make this dua with sincerity, conviction, and a humble heart, recognizing that all provision comes from Allah. Turning towards the Qibla while making dua is also a sunnah, though not strictly required for this specific dua in this context.

Virtues & Benefits

Making dua for rain is a direct act of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). It reminds us of our dependence on Him for the basic necessities of life, like water for agriculture and sustenance. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this specific phrasing, indicating its importance and effectiveness when seeking Allah's help in times of drought. This act can also bring about a sense of community as people unite in their supplication.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A man entered the mosque on a Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah. The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the animals have perished and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah to give us rain.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.'" Sahih al-Bukhari 1009. Following this, the narrator mentions that it rained throughout the week until the next Friday.
