اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا مَرِيئًا مَرِيعًا نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ عَاجِلًا غَيْرَ آجِلٍ
O Allah, grant us rain, a saving rain, pleasant, plentiful, beneficial, not harmful, soon, not delayed.
Allahumma asqina ghaythan mugheethan maree'an maree'an nafi'an ghayra darrin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin
When to Read
A drought-stricken land. Fields wither, hearts grow anxious. We find ourselves yearning for the skies to open, not just for the earth's sake, but for a spiritual revival too. This profound dua, recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during a time of severe drought, is primarily for seeking beneficial rain. You can recite this when you witness or hear of drought, when rainfall is scarce, or even when you simply feel a spiritual dryness in your heart and wish for Allah's mercy to purify it and remove any impediments to your worship. It’s a supplication acknowledging Allah’s power to bring life and ease, both physically and spiritually.
How to Read
Making this dua, like all supplications, begins with sincere intention and humility before Allah. While not strictly required for all duas, facing the Qibla is a sunnah when making formal supplications or during Salatul Istisqa (the prayer for rain). As the Prophet ﷺ did, raise your hands during this dua, showing your earnestness and dependence on Allah. His armpits were visible from how high he raised his hands, signifying profound humility. Understand the meaning of each word. You are asking Allah for beneficial rain, a mercy that revives the land and, by extension, revitalizes our souls and helps us overcome spiritual obstacles. Don't give up if the rain doesn't come immediately. Allah answers duas in His perfect timing and in the way that is best for us.
Virtues & Benefits
The immediate benefit of reciting this dua with sincerity is the hope for Allah’s mercy in sending life-giving rain to revive the earth and its inhabitants. But its blessings run deeper: Beneficial rain brings greenery, nourishes crops, fills wells, and supports all forms of life, alleviating hardship and anxiety in the community. The Quran reminds us that Allah sends down pure water from the sky (Al-Furqan 25:48). Just as water purifies our bodies for prayer, it metaphorically cleanses our hearts. When our physical needs are met through Allah’s bounty, our hearts are freed from worldly anxieties, making it easier to focus on Him in worship. This ease itself removes a significant obstacle. Similar to how rain brings life to barren land, it can symbolize the revival of a spiritually dry heart, increasing our gratitude, reflection, and connection to Allah. A land made fertile by rain allows for contemplation of Allah's signs, drawing us closer to Him. The Prophet's ﷺ own example shows us that sincere dua is answered. The people witnessed rain immediately after his supplication, underscoring Allah’s promise to respond to those who call upon Him. This strengthens our faith and dependence on Allah in all matters.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: "The Prophet ﷺ came when the sun had risen, and sat on the minbar. He said: 'You complained about drought in your lands, and the delay in rain for its season. Allah has commanded you to supplicate Him, and He has promised to answer you.' Then he raised his hands and supplicated: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا مَرِيئًا مَرِيعًا نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ عَاجِلًا غَيْرَ آجِلٍ > > **Translation:** 'O Allah, grant us rain, a saving rain, pleasant, plentiful, beneficial, not harmful, soon, not delayed.' > > **Transliteration:** *Allahumma asqina ghaythan mugheethan maree'an maree'an nafi'an ghayra darrin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin.* He remained raising his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. Then the people were given rain. Then the rain came from every direction, and the people hurried to their houses, and the Prophet ﷺ kept laughing until his molar teeth were visible. He said: 'I bear witness that Allah is Able to do all things, and that I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger.'" — Sunan Abi Dawud 1169
