Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1026

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is typically recited when the land is dry, there is a lack of rain, and people are in need of it. In the context of seeking knowledge, we can make this dua during times of difficulty in learning, when facing intellectual blockages, or when praying for clarity and ease in understanding. It's a direct appeal to Allah for His mercy, which encompasses all aspects of life, including our educational pursuits.

How to Read

When seeking rain for any need, including the nourishment of the mind for learning, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be earnest and specific in our supplication. This hadith shows the repetition of the plea, emphasizing sincerity and urgency. You can raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah, and repeat the phrase 'Allahumma aghithna' with a humble heart, acknowledging Allah's power and our dependence on Him. It's also beneficial to be in a state of purity.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain is a direct act of acknowledging Allah's sovereignty over the natural world and our reliance on His provision. Al-Qurtubi mentions that rain is a sign of Allah's mercy (Ar-Ra'd 13:12), and seeking it is seeking that mercy. For educational pursuits, this translates to seeking Allah's mercy for understanding, clarity, and ease in acquiring knowledge. Just as rain nourishes the earth to bring forth life and sustenance, spiritual rain can nourish the mind and heart, enabling deeper comprehension and a greater capacity for learning.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon on Friday, a man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the rain has been withheld and the children are hungry.' So, the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain.' He then said: 'O Allah, provide for them by the means of the vegetation of the earth, and grant them blessings, and may you not hold them (in captivity) after this.' Anas added: 'By Allah, we did not see the sky with any trace of clouds, but the clouds gathered and it rained heavily.' Then the people rode their camels and returned home."
