O Allah, we ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what is within it, and the goodness of what You have sent it with. And we seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is within it, and the evil of what You have sent it with.
Allahumma inna nas'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma fiha wa khayra ma arsalta bihi, wa na'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma arsalta bihi.
When to Read
This dua is recited when the signs of rain appear, such as clouds gathering or the wind blowing strongly. While not directly for childbirth, the general principle of seeking Allah's mercy during times of need applies. For childbirth specifically, one can turn to Allah at any moment with heartfelt supplication, combining this dua with prayers for ease and safety. The underlying theme is reliance on Allah during critical moments, asking for His grace and protection.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, especially when observing the signs of rain. It's a beautiful expression of acknowledging Allah's power over the elements and seeking His blessings. For a pregnant woman or her family, this can be part of a broader supplication during pregnancy and labor, turning to Allah with specific pleas for a smooth and healthy delivery, while also reciting general duas for protection and ease. It's best to face the direction of the rain or clouds if possible, and to raise one's hands in supplication as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses a comprehensive seeking of good and refuge from evil related to the rain. By reciting it, we acknowledge that all blessings come from Allah and all harm is averted by His will. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The people of Al-Madinah complained of drought in the year of the famine, and they complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ about it. Then he lowered his hands and turned his face towards the sky and it began to rain. And the clouds began to gather. Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ lowered his hands and turned his face towards the sky and it began to rain. And the clouds began to gather. Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ, with his hands raised, said: 'O Allah, rain upon us.' And he said: 'O Allah, rain upon us.' And he said: 'O Allah, rain upon us.' So they said: 'O Allah's Messenger, will you not have your cloak fastened on your back?'" An-Nadr said: "I think `Amr said: 'So he stood up and put on his cloak, and it began to rain." Then he narrated: "And in the version of Ibn Numayr: The people of Al-Madinah complained of drought in the time of Allah's Messenger ﷺ. They complained to him, so he said: 'Go out and prepare yourselves for prayer on the day of the appointed time.' So they went out and prayed. Then the Prophet ﷺ turned his face towards the sky and raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' Then he said: 'O Allah, send down rain on us, and do not make us despair.' He said: 'O Allah, give us rain of blessing, not of destruction, and do not make us despair.' He said: 'O Allah, rain upon the mountains, the hills, the valleys, the roots of the trees, and the grazing lands.' He said: 'So it began to rain.' And in the version of Ibn Numayr: And it rained till the rain flowed in torrents. Anas said: 'And then Allah's Messenger ﷺ smiled, and his teeth appeared.' Then he said: 'I bear witness that Allah is Able to do all things, and I am His servant, and Allah's Messenger.' And in the version of `Amr: The people of Al-Madinah complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ of the drought of the season. So he prayed for rain and said: 'O Allah, give us rain.' He raised his hands until I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he turned towards the Qibla and turned his cloak, and then he turned his face towards the clouds and said: 'O Allah, send down rain upon us.' He said: 'O Allah, send down rain upon us.' He said: 'O Allah, send down rain upon us.' And the sky became overcast. And 'Amr said: 'And it rained like the time of the season.' And in the version of Ibn Numayr: 'And it rained like the time of the season.' Then he said: 'Do you testify that I have conveyed Allah's message?' Then he said: 'O Allah, bear witness.' He said this three times. Then he said: 'O Allah, make it useful.' He said: 'O Allah, make it useful.' He said: 'O Allah, make it useful.' And then he said: 'O Allah, forgive us.' He said: 'O Allah, forgive us.' He said: 'O Allah, forgive us.' (Sahih Muslim 899)
