اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This powerful and direct supplication is specifically for seeking rain during times of drought. While the primary context is drought, the underlying principle of seeking Allah's mercy in times of hardship applies broadly. In the specific situation of natural disasters that may cause the imprisonment or distress of people (such as floods, landslides, or earthquakes that trap individuals), this dua can be raised to Allah with the intention of seeking His mercy to alleviate the disaster, provide relief, and free those affected.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be earnest and sincere in our duas. When seeking rain, he would raise his hands and turn his cloak, indicating a deep turning to Allah. For this particular dua, it is recited with a sincere heart, facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) if possible, and with full conviction that Allah is the only one who can bring relief. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and reliance on Allah's mercy. It's also recommended to combine this dua with seeking forgiveness for sins, as rain is often withheld due to our transgressions (as indicated in Surah Nuh).
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain is a direct act of worship and reliance on Allah. The Quran mentions that Allah sends down rain as a mercy and a means of sustenance (e.g., Surah Al-A'raf 57). When people are trapped by disasters, seeking Allah's mercy through dua is a spiritual lifeline. It reminds us that our ultimate power lies in turning to our Creator. The Hadith emphasizes the Prophet's ﷺ practice of asking Allah for rain, showing its importance. By supplicating for rain during a disaster, we are indirectly asking for the disaster to be removed, for those trapped to be freed, and for Allah's mercy to encompass them.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people of the desert asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to ask Allah to send them rain, so he prayed for rain. The sky became cloudy and then it rained. They were drenched by the rain until they went looking for a place to shelter. The next Friday they asked him again, and he said: 'O people, it is time for showering and it is time for the orchards to fill up.' Then he prayed: 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna' (O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!)." Sahih al-Bukhari 1014.
