Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1023

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is recited during a drought or when rain is scarce. It is particularly poignant when there is a need for divine intervention, such as seeking the release of oppressed individuals or prisoners of war. The general supplication for rain can be made at any time, but the intention behind it, seeking Allah's mercy for those suffering, elevates its significance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, raising your hands as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would during supplication. It is recommended to repeat it multiple times, as done in the narration. It's also a beautiful practice to make the intention for the release of all prisoners of war and the oppressed while reciting this prayer for rain, seeking Allah's mercy on all who are suffering.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain is a direct supplication to Allah for a vital resource that sustains life, reflecting our utter dependence on Him. The act of supplicating for the release of prisoners of war is a demonstration of compassion and empathy, embodying the Islamic principle of brotherhood and justice. By combining these intentions, we seek Allah's immense mercy to alleviate suffering both in terms of physical needs (like rain) and the plight of those held captive. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that Allah is pleased when His creation asks Him for their needs, and He is especially merciful towards those who show mercy to others.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked to invoke Allah for rain during the drought. He said: 'O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain.' He further said: 'By Allah, We will not be prevented from it (i.e. rain) again.' Then Allah sent down rain for them for a week. It rained continuously until the next Friday. A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Your houses have collapsed.' Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood up and invoked: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed from Medina to its surrounding areas.
