Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy for the Protection of Roads and Travel During Storms

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1013

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This specific supplication is made when there is a general need for rain, often during a drought. However, the sentiment of seeking Allah's help during times of need, like storms affecting travel, can be invoked by making a similar heartfelt plea.

How to Read

This is a direct plea to Allah. It is best recited with sincerity and a feeling of dependence on Him. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and earnestness of the need. Raising the hands is a common practice when making supplication for rain.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's rain is a means of receiving His mercy, which sustains life and the environment. During storms that disrupt travel and pose dangers, turning to Allah in sincere dua is how we place our trust in Him while taking practical precautions. It reminds us that ultimate safety and provision are in His hands.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would supplicate for rain by saying: 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna' (O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain). This was during a time of drought when the people were suffering. When the rain came, he would say: 'This is by the mercy of Allah.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013). While this hadith specifically addresses drought, the practice of seeking Allah's assistance during hardship is universal. When facing severe weather that makes travel dangerous, one can adapt this earnest plea to ask Allah for safety and ease in their journey.
