اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This supplication is made during times of drought and when seeking Allah's mercy for rain. It is particularly poignant when one reflects on the needs of all creation, including those who have passed on and are dependent on Allah's mercy. The very act of asking for rain is an act of remembrance and a plea for life, a mercy that extends beyond the present moment and encompasses all of existence.
How to Read
Raise your hands when making this supplication, mimicking the posture of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Turn your palms upwards towards the sky. Repeat the phrase three times as the Prophet ﷺ did. Feel a genuine sense of need and reliance on Allah alone. It's also beneficial to be in a state of purity and to face the Qiblah if possible. This dua can be made individually or collectively, especially during the congregational prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa).
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through supplication is a way to acknowledge Allah's power and His attribute of Ar-Rahman (The Most Compassionate). It reminds us that sustenance and life itself are from Him. This dua, when made with sincerity, can alleviate hardship caused by drought. Furthermore, by asking for rain as a general mercy, we implicitly include the mercy needed for the souls of the deceased, as all mercy originates from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that sincere supplication can bring about relief and blessings, as narrated: 'The believer's supplication is beneficial for what is happening and for what is not happening. Calamities do not deter the supplication.' (At-Tirmidhi - Hasan Gharib, Sahih al-Jami' 1634).

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man entered the mosque on a Friday and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the horses and the sheep have perished.' So the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, water us with Your rain, O Allah, water us with Your rain, O Allah, water us with Your rain.' They said, 'The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ raised his hands so high that I saw the whiteness of his armpits.' He then said, 'O Allah, provide for us in Sham and Yemen.' They said, 'And in Najd?' He said, 'O Allah, provide for us in Sham and Yemen.' The man then said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the perished ones!' So he raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us, O Allah, on the hills, valleys, and lowlands, and on the places where trees grow and where the water collects.' Anas added: 'So the clouds gathered and the rain fell, and we went out and the streams were flowing. So the men laughed and joked.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1009)
