When to Read

This dua is specifically recited during times of drought, when the earth is parched and there is a dire need for rain. It's a profound supplication to Allah for His mercy to bring life-giving water. While this specific wording is for rain, the spirit of pleading for mercy can be extended to seeking solace and forgiveness for the deceased, especially when reciting general duas for the departed during times of hardship or reflection. The concept of 'mercy' connects the bestowal of rain with the mercy we seek for those who have passed.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, facing the Qiblah if possible. It is recommended to raise your hands while making this supplication. Understand that the request for rain is a plea for Allah's sustenance and mercy upon His creation, which in turn reminds us of our need for His mercy for the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the complete reliance of a believer on Allah for their needs, including the essential resource of water. By seeking 'rain that revives,' we acknowledge Allah as the source of all life. The emphasis on 'wholesome, beneficial, not harmful' reflects the understanding that all good comes from Allah. The request for it to be 'soon, not delayed' highlights our immediate need and trust in His timely response. This act of seeking rain is an act of worship, acknowledging Allah's power over the elements and His role as the Provider, Ar-Razzaq. This profound dependence on Allah for sustenance naturally leads to remembering those who are no longer with us, prompting us to pray for Allah's mercy upon them, seeking the same life-giving sustenance of divine compassion for their souls.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was a drought during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so while he was delivering the sermon, a man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, our property has been destroyed and our bellies are empty, so ask Allah to give us rain.' So he raised his hands and the people raised their hands with him, and they did not put them down until they saw the cloud like a mountain, then it rained. Narrated by Abu Dawud, and Al-Bukhari and Muslim, but with the wording: 'O Allah, rain us and do not make us despair.' Abu Dawud said: Then it rained until the city of Medina was flooded. It was said to Anas: Was it the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? He said: No, it was after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
