Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy for the Departed and the Grave

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 1036 (Bukhari), 897 (Muslim)

O Allah, grant us a rain of mercy, not a rain of punishment, not a rain of destruction, and not a rain of drowning. O Allah, [let it rain] upon the hills and the mountains, and the valleys, and the places where trees grow.

Allahumma suqya rahmatin, la suqya 'adhabin, wa la hadmin, wa la gharaqin. Allahumma 'alal-akami wadh-dhirabi, wa butoonil-awdiyati, wa manabitish-shajari.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when seeking rain, particularly during times of drought. It is also a beautiful supplication to remember the deceased. While this specific wording is for seeking rain, the sentiment of seeking Allah's mercy for those who have passed can be offered at any time, especially when remembering them or visiting graves. The act of rain itself can be a reminder of Allah's mercy, which we pray extends to all, living and departed.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would raise his hands when supplicating for rain, turning his cloak inside out as a sign of seeking change and turning to Allah. Facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) is also a recommended etiquette when making dua. Recite this supplication with sincerity and a hopeful heart, recognizing that Allah is the source of all blessings, including rain and His boundless mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking beneficial rain for the land, avoiding its destructive potential, and a beautiful acknowledgment of Allah's overarching mercy. It reminds us that even in our supplications for worldly needs like rain, we should remember our departed brothers and sisters. The rain itself can be a mercy from Allah, and by extension, we pray for His mercy upon those in their graves. It fosters gratitude for Allah's provisions and humility in seeking His help.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when he saw the rising of the sun, would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma fiha wa khaira ma ursilatu bihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma ursilatu bihi.' (O Allah, I ask You for the good of it, the good of what is in it, and the good of what it has been sent with, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of it, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.) And when the wind blew strongly, the Prophet ﷺ would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma ursilatu bihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma ursilatu bihi.' (O Allah, I ask You for the good of it, and the good of what it has been sent with, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.) And when the sky became overcast and the rain was expected, the Prophet ﷺ would leave his house and say: 'Allahumma suqya rahmatin, la suqya 'adhabin, wa la hadmin, wa la gharaqin. Allahumma 'alal-akami wadh-dhirabi, wa butoonil-awdiyati, wa manabitish-shajari.' (O Allah, grant us a rain of mercy, not a rain of punishment, not a rain of destruction, and not a rain of drowning. O Allah, [let it rain] upon the hills and the mountains, and the valleys, and the places where trees grow.)
