Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1011

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This specific supplication is made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when the people complained of dryness and lack of rain. It's a direct plea for relief during times of drought, especially when the lack of water impacts livelihoods, agriculture, and the general well-being of the community. Considering the context of suffering and sickness, this dua becomes even more vital. Rain can alleviate drought conditions, which often exacerbate illness and hardship, particularly for the vulnerable, the elderly, and the sick who may struggle in dry and dusty environments. It can also help replenish water sources essential for hygiene and health.

How to Read

This is a direct, repeated plea from the Prophet ﷺ. It should be recited with sincerity and earnestness, acknowledging our absolute dependence on Allah for His mercy. Raising the hands during the dua is a recommended etiquette when asking Allah for rain. It's also a practice of the Prophet ﷺ to turn his back towards the qiblah and raise his hands when making this specific dua for rain during a drought. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and deep need for Allah's response. Accompanying this with sincere repentance and good deeds can increase the likelihood of acceptance.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is seeking Allah's immediate relief from drought. This rain is not just a physical necessity but a manifestation of Allah's mercy (Ar-Rahmah). By asking for rain, we are asking for Allah to show His mercy upon us, our land, and all its inhabitants. This mercy directly addresses suffering; clean water is crucial for health, and drought often leads to scarcity, poverty, and disease. Alleviating drought through rain brings comfort to the sick who may suffer from dehydration or respiratory issues exacerbated by dry conditions, and it brings relief to all who are struggling due to lack of this essential blessing.

Source & Authentication

Anas (bin Malik) (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: During the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), the people suffered from drought. While the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday sermon, a man stood up and said: 'O Allah’s Messenger, our property has been destroyed and our children are hungry; so ask Allah to bless us with rain.' The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.' It was said that the sky was not cloudy and there was no cloud between them and 'Utt' (a place). The Prophet (ﷺ) then turned towards a man who was under his shelter and said: 'O Allah, make it rain around us and not upon us.' He said: 'O Allah, give rain to the grazing lands and the hills and the ravines and the places where plants grow.' Anas said: 'So the rain came down and we went out, and the sun was shining.'
