Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy for Orphaned Children

Rain
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1174

O Allah, grant us refreshing rain that is life-giving, wholesome, beneficial, not harmful, coming soon, not delayed; abundant and widespread, perpetual and lasting; a rain for those present and those who are nomadic. Our Lord, grant our children and our orphans their full share (of sustenance from this rain).

Allahumma-sqina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an ghayra darin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin, sahhan tabaqan, da'iman da'iman, saqyan lil-hadiri wal-badiyah, Rabbana wa a'ti shuf'ata atfalina wa yatamana.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when the land is dry and there is a need for rain. It is particularly poignant to remember orphaned children during such times, asking Allah to ensure they also receive the blessings of the rain and are provided for. It can be recited individually or during congregational prayers for rain (Salat al-Istisqa).

How to Read

It is recommended to make sincere supplication, with humility and certainty in Allah's response. Raising one's hands is a common practice during Istisqa prayer and supplication for rain. The focus should be on acknowledging Allah's power and mercy, and earnestly requesting His favor for all, especially the vulnerable.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through sincere dua is a practice of the Prophets (peace be upon them) and the righteous. It reminds us of our utter dependence on Allah for every aspect of our lives, including the fundamental necessity of water. Including a plea for orphaned children highlights the Islamic emphasis on compassion and care for the vulnerable, seeking Allah's mercy for them specifically.

Source & Authentication

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The people complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that there was no rain. So he ascended the pulpit and supplicated. Then he said: 'Allahumma-sqina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an ghayra darin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin, sahhan tabaqan, da'iman da'iman, saqyan lil-hadiri wal-badiyah, Rabbana wa a'ti shuf'ata atfalina wa yatamana.' (O Allah, grant us refreshing rain that is life-giving, wholesome, beneficial, not harmful, coming soon, not delayed; abundant and widespread, perpetual and lasting; a rain for those present and those who are nomadic. Our Lord, grant our children and our orphans their full share (of sustenance from this rain).) So the people exclaimed: 'O Allah's Messenger, you have asked Allah to bring rain and it has come!' (Sahih: The narration regarding the Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicating for rain with similar words is found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. This specific wording including the plea for children is graded Hasan).
