اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This dua is specifically recited during times of drought or when seeking rain. It is often uttered during the Eid prayer (if rain is needed) or during a specific rainfall prayer (Salat al-Istisqa). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also recited this during the Khutbah (sermon) of a Friday prayer when there was a need for rain. Reciting it with sincere intention and a hopeful heart is key.
How to Read
This is a direct supplication to Allah. It is recommended to raise one's hands while making this dua, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when seeking rain. It is best to recite it with humility, sincerity, and full reliance on Allah's mercy. One might also follow the Sunnah of performing Salat al-Istisqa, which includes this invocation.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through this dua is an act of acknowledging our absolute dependence on Allah for all provisions, including water, which is essential for life and sustenance. It reflects Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). The act of asking for rain is also linked to seeking Allah's mercy, which in turn brings peace and contentment to the heart. When Allah sends rain, it signifies His response to our supplication and His mercy showering upon us, alleviating hardship and bringing relief. The Quran mentions the effects of rain: "And We have sent down from the sky water - a blessed rain..." (Surah Qaf 50:9), highlighting its blessed nature and life-giving properties.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate for rain, and he would say: Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013). In another narration, it is mentioned that during a Khutbah, a man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! The wealth has been destroyed and the paths are cut off, so ask Allah to give us rain.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: 'Allahumma aghithna.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1012)
