When to Read
This dua is specifically recited during times of drought and when rain is scarce. It's a plea to Allah for His mercy to send down beneficial rain. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this supplication with raised hands, facing the Qiblah, especially when the need was dire.
How to Read
When seeking rain, especially during a drought, one should turn to Allah with sincerity and humility. This dua is repeated three times, reflecting the Prophet's ﷺ practice. It's also recommended to perform Wudu, face the Qiblah, raise one's hands, and begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ before making the dua. After the rain falls, it is also a Sunnah to say the dua for when it rains.

Seeking rain through this supplication is a direct act of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). It reminds us that all provisions, including water, come from Him. Beneficial rain brings life to the earth, nourishes crops, and sustains life, all of which are blessings from Allah. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, the livestock are perishing and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah to give us rain." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, "Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna" (O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!). Anas added, "By Allah, we did not see the sky clear of clouds at all. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up, and after him, a man from Thaqif, who was riding his camel, came. He was in Hijaz, and the people were asking him about the rain, and he said, 'I have just returned from the Prophet (ﷺ) and he asked for rain.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013)
