اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited during times of drought or when there is a pressing need for rain, whether for agriculture, drinking water, or to replenish essential water infrastructure like reservoirs and wells. It's a direct plea to Allah when the skies are withholding their blessings. You might say it after the obligatory prayers or during special supplication gatherings (Salat al-Istisqa).

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, raising your hands as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Focus on the need and the immense mercy of Allah. You can repeat it multiple times, allowing the plea to resonate. It’s also recommended to accompany this dua with seeking forgiveness (istighfar) and acknowledging Allah's power, as He is the sole provider of rain.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is seeking Allah's immediate help and mercy during times of need. Rain is a mercy from Allah, essential for life itself, as He says: 'And We send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the ground, and indeed, We are able to take it away.' (Al-Mu'minun 23:18). Making dua for rain is an acknowledgment of our dependence on Allah and a direct way to call upon Him for sustenance and relief. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and the earnestness of the supplication.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: 'A man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man said, 'O Allah's Messenger! My property has been destroyed and my children are hungry, so please ask Allah to give us rain.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain.' Anas added: 'By Allah, we did not see any clouds in the sky or any sign of rain.' Then he said: 'Here is the pulpit.' When the Prophet (ﷺ) got to the pulpit, he did not get down till the rain started pouring from that day till the next Friday. A man stood up while the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon on the next Friday and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The rain has drowned the roads, so please ask Allah to stop it.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us, O Allah, on the hills and valleys, and on the bushes and deserts.' Anas added: 'The rain stopped that day and they went out walking in the sunshine.' Sahih al-Bukhari 1014
