Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy During Childbirth

Rain
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1176

O Allah, give us rain that revives us, that is wholesome and beneficial, not harmful, arriving soon and not delayed. O Allah, give water to Your lands and Your animals and spread Your mercy. O Allah, we seek Your forgiveness, for You are indeed the Great Forgiver. Send down abundant rain upon us from the sky.

Allahumma'sqina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an ghayra dar-rin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin. Allahumma'sqi biladaka wa baha'imaka wanshur rahmata-ka. Allahumma inna nastaghfiruk, innaka kunta Ghaffaran fa'arsil'is-samaa'alayna midraran.

When to Read

This dua is traditionally recited during times of drought, seeking Allah's mercy for rain. When facing the profound challenges and anxieties of childbirth, a mother can turn to this dua, seeking Allah's mercy not just for rain, but for a safe and smooth delivery. The concept of seeking Allah's provision and mercy through rain is analogous to seeking His help during a critical moment like labor. It can be recited before and during labor, as well as by loved ones praying for the mother and child.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and conviction, turning to Allah in humility. Face the Qiblah if possible, and raise your hands as is customary when supplicating for rain. Acknowledge your need for Allah's mercy and His power to grant ease in all situations, including childbirth. The act of seeking rain embodies seeking Allah's life-giving and nurturing mercy, which is exactly what is needed during labor.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers seeking relief from hardship (drought/childbirth), the sustenance of Allah's creation (lands, animals), and the spread of His mercy. It is a holistic supplication that acknowledges Allah's dominion and His compassion. By asking for beneficial, non-harmful rain, we implicitly ask for Allah's blessings and protection during the vulnerable period of childbirth, seeking an easy and healthy outcome.

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The people complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ about the dryness of the land, so he ﷺ said: 'Allahumma'sqina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an 'ajilan ghayra dar-rin.' She said: 'So he was made to rain.' Later, the people complained to him again, so he said: 'Allahumma'sqi biladaka wa baha'imaka wanshur rahmata-ka wa ahyi baladaka'l-mawtak.' She said: 'And it rained with them for a month, and the people came to him and complained that there was too much rain. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'Allahumma hawraynayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'ala al-ajami wa al-azrabi.' And the clouds dispersed over them. And in a narration: 'Allahumma inna nastaghfiruk, innaka kunta Ghaffaran fa'arsil'is-samaa'alayna midraran.' (This version combines elements from different narrations about the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for rain, with the third part being particularly relevant as a general plea for mercy and provision.)
