Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1028

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This specific dua is recited during the congregational prayer for rain (Salatul Istisqa). However, the sentiment of seeking Allah’s help and blessings can be made at any time, especially when one feels a need for spiritual cleansing or is facing hardship.

How to Read

This is a direct supplication. Raise your hands as you would during any dua, with sincerity and conviction in Allah’s ability to answer. It is often said three times for emphasis, as the Prophet ﷺ did. The essence is to call upon Allah directly, expressing your need and trust in Him. For the congregational prayer, it follows a specific format involving sermons and prayers led by the Imam.

Virtues & Benefits

The blessing of rain in Islam is multifaceted. It is a sign of Allah's mercy and a means of sustenance for His creation. Beyond the physical, rain is often seen as a metaphor for spiritual cleansing. Just as rain washes away physical dirt, sincere dua and repentance, coupled with Allah's mercy manifested as rain, can wash away sins and purify the heart. Allah says in the Quran, "And it is He who sends down rain after they had despaired and spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy." (Ash-Shura 42:28). This verse highlights rain as a manifestation of Allah's mercy, which is the source of all goodness, including forgiveness.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man entered the Masjid (on a Friday) and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah. The man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Our wealth has been destroyed and our families are hungry, so please invoke Allah for us.' So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised both his hands and said, 'O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!' Anas added, 'By Allah, there was no cloud in the sky.' Then he said, 'Will you stop asking?' He went to the pulpit and then said, 'O Allah, grant us rain!' and he raised his hands. He (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!' He (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, make it a rain of bounty, not a rain of destruction, not a rain of drowning, not a rain of devastation.' Then he said, 'Invoke Allah to forgive you.' He then ascended the pulpit and mentioned Allah and praised Him, and then said, 'O Allah, grant us rain!' He then said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' He said, 'O Allah, on the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, on the valleys, and on the plains where trees grow.' Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'So the clouds appeared like clouds of hail, and then it rained.'
