Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1013

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This supplication is specifically made during a drought or when there is a need for rain. It's a communal dua, often recited by the Imam in congregation, but individuals can also make it earnestly. When praying for rain, we also implicitly ask for Allah's blessings upon our children and their well-being, as rain is a source of life and sustenance for all creation.

How to Read

When seeking rain, it is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to make this dua with earnestness and sincerity. It is recommended to raise one's hands in supplication. The Prophet ﷺ also instructed to turn one's cloak inside out as a symbolic act when making dua for rain, signifying a turning towards Allah and a plea for a change in circumstances. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1012). Recite this with a heartfelt plea, understanding that Allah is the only one who can bring down the rain and protect our little ones.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through dua is a direct manifestation of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). It reminds us that we are dependent on His mercy for our survival and the well-being of our families, including our children. The Prophet's ﷺ prayer for rain was not just for crops but for the life of the entire community. By extension, this dua for rain becomes a prayer for the health and prosperity of our future generations, as a healthy environment is crucial for healthy children.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'A man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has been destroyed and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah that He sends us rain." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, give us rain, O Allah, give us rain, O Allah, give us rain." ...' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013). Another narration mentions the Prophet ﷺ turning his cloak: 'He then turned his cloak, and it became apparent to the people that he had turned it.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1012)
