When to Read
This dua is recited during the Istisqa (prayer for rain) when the Muslim community faces drought. It is also a general supplication to seek Allah's provision and blessings, which extends to asking for a healthy conception and pregnancy, as rain is a symbol of Allah's mercy and life-giving power.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt reliance on Allah. It is often recited collectively during the Istisqa prayer, but an individual can also make this dua during times of need or when supplicating for fertility and a blessed pregnancy. Raising hands during the supplication is a recommended etiquette when seeking rain from Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain is a direct request for Allah's sustenance and mercy, which are essential for all aspects of life, including the creation of healthy offspring. Rain brings life to the earth, symbolizing Allah's power to bring life to the womb. By asking for rain, we are in essence asking for Allah's blessing upon our fertility and the health of our pregnancies, recognizing that all life and growth come from Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to make this specific dua during the Istisqa prayer when the land was parched, demonstrating our dependence on Allah for survival and well-being.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The people of the desert asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to invoke Allah for rain, so he invoked Allah for rain. He ascended the pulpit and addressed the people, saying: 'O Allah, grant us Your shade and rain from the clouds. Make it abundant, beneficial, and widespread.' He then said: 'I ask Allah for His forgiveness, and I turn to Him.' He then faced the Qibla, raised his hands, and invoked: 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna.' (O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.) He then descended and prayed two rak'ahs. He delivered a sermon. He then went towards his place of prayer and prayed two rak'ahs. The people asked him to invoke Allah again. He said: 'O Allah, give us rain that is good and beneficial, not harmful.'
