اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This dua is specifically recited during times of drought when rain is desperately needed. While the direct context of this hadith is seeking general relief from a dry spell, the intention can be broadened when a newborn arrives during such a time. Parents can make this supplication with the heartfelt intention of seeking Allah's blessing for their child's health and well-being, seeing the arrival of rain as a sign of Allah's mercy for the new life.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would raise his hands when supplicating for rain, turning his back towards the Qiblah and often raising them until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. This dua, repeated three times, emphasizes the urgency and sincerity of the request. When making this for a newborn, one can also place their hand on the baby (if possible and appropriate) while making dua, or simply hold the intention for the child's health.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through dua is a direct act of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and an acknowledgment of His power over all creation. Rain is a mercy from Allah, bringing life to the earth and its inhabitants. In the context of a newborn, asking for rain can be a way to seek Allah’s abundant mercy and blessings upon the new child, praying for their healthy growth and protection, just as rain nurtures the earth. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The people of the sand (i.e. bedouins) said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Our camels are dying, our sheep are dying, our camels are perishing, and our sheep are perishing.' So he stood up and said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1014). This shows the Prophet’s ﷺ immediate response to the needs of his community, highlighting the importance of seeking Allah's help in times of hardship.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people of the sand (i.e. bedouins) said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Our camels are dying, our sheep are dying, our camels are perishing, and our sheep are perishing.' So he stood up and said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain.' He raised his hands so high that I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain.' He said it three times. Then he said: 'O Allah! Make it a rain that will bring back the blessings.' And it rained like clouds on the towns and the surrounding areas, and it rained for six days. A man came from that area and asked Anas: 'Did Ibn 'Abbas mention this? ' Anas replied: 'Ibn 'Abbas did not mention it, but I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing this.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1014)
