Dua for Rain: Reflecting on Allah's Signs in the Clouds

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1028

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when the skies are dry, and there is a need for rain. It's a direct supplication to Allah when the community experiences drought or when rain is beneficial for crops and sustenance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would repeat this supplication three times during such times, showing the earnestness of his request.

How to Read

This supplication is simple yet profound. Raise your hands as you would during any earnest dua, facing the Qiblah if possible. Utter the words with sincerity and a hopeful heart, believing that Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) has the power to bring forth the rain. Repeating it three times, as the Prophet ﷺ did, adds to its emphasis and sincerity.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through this dua is a recognition of our absolute dependence on Allah for provision. It reflects our understanding that rain is not a natural phenomenon in isolation, but a mercy from Allah, a sign of His power and His care for His creation. The Quran mentions rain as a source of life: 'And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby growth of all kinds...' (Al-An'am 6:99). When we ask for rain, we are essentially asking for Allah's mercy and the continuation of life and sustenance He has ordained.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah on Friday, a man stood up and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! The camels and the horses have perished (due to drought). And the roads have become impassable. Pray to Allah for rain for us.' So he said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain, O Allah! Grant us rain, O Allah! Grant us rain.' He said: 'The sky became cloudy and it was about to rain, and by Allah! Before entering his house, the Prophet ﷺ witnessed the like of a downpour. And it rained that day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day until the next Friday. A man stood up on the next Friday (while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah) and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! The houses have collapsed, the paths have become impassable.' So, the Prophet ﷺ raised both his hands and said: 'O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah! On the plateaus and on the mountains, and the river valleys and the places where plants grow.' And the rain stopped, and it cleared away from Medina and it rained around it. And it rained around Medina for a full month. Regarding the story of the rain during the time of Anas, it is narrated on the authority of Anas that he said: 'It was during the time of the Prophet ﷺ that a drought overtook them, so they entered the mosque and sat in their places. The Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah on Friday when a man stood up and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! The rain has been withheld from us, so pray to Allah for rain.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain; O Allah! Grant us rain; O Allah! Grant us rain.' Anas said: 'And the sky was clear.' Then he said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain, for verily We are the ones who will be guided.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: 'O Allah! Grant us rain, O Allah! Grant us rain, O Allah! Grant us rain.' Anas said: 'Then the sky became cloudy like mountains.' Then he said: 'And it rained upon them, and it did not rain upon them except until the dust was wiped off their heads.' He said: 'Then it rained upon them until noon, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out for the prayer of Zuhr, and he had made himself and his companions dry with leaves. And they prayed Zuhr and prayed Asr and Maghrib and Isha and Fajr.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1028)
