When to Read
This profound supplication is recited when we are in dire need of rain, during periods of drought or water scarcity. While often associated with collective prayers for rain (Salat al-Istisqa'), you can certainly make this dua individually, especially when contemplating the broader blessings of rain for all creation, including the ease and comfort it brings to those on journeys.
How to Read
When supplicating with this dua, it is sunnah to raise your hands, just as the Prophet ﷺ did when asking Allah for rain. Recite it with a heart full of sincerity, humility, and unwavering conviction in Allah's boundless power and mercy. You can repeat the supplication as often as you feel the urgency and need in your heart, pouring out your needs to your Creator.
Virtues & Benefits
Invoking Allah for rain is a beautiful act of showing our absolute dependence on Him as the sole Provider. Rain is a profound mercy from Allah; it breathes life into parched lands, allows vegetation to flourish, replenishes vital water sources, purifies the air, and alleviates the distress of drought and famine. For travelers, specifically, rain can mean access to fresh water, relief from dusty and harsh conditions, cooler temperatures, and a journey made less arduous. This dua is a direct and earnest plea for Allah's provision and compassion, a reminder that He answers the supplications of His servants when they turn to Him in true need.

Anas b. Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon on Friday when a person stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, horses and goats have perished, so pray to Allah that He may provide us with rain." So he raised his hands and supplicated: "O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain!" Anas added, "By Allah, there were no clouds in the sky and there was no building or house between us and Sal' mountain (around Madina). Then a cloud appeared like a shield. Then it began to expand and then rained. By Allah, I did not see the sun for a whole week. Then on the next Friday, a person stood up from that door and said, "O Messenger of Allah, our houses have collapsed and our journeys have been obstructed, so pray to Allah that He may withhold it from us." So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, on the hillocks and mountains, on the riverbeds and on the places where trees grow." So the rain ceased, and we walked out in the sun. — Sahih Muslim 897b
