When to Read
This supplication is made when the land is dry, crops are failing, and there is a genuine need for rain. It is a communal prayer, often led by the Imam, but individuals can also make this dua privately. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would raise his hands and turn his cloak when making dua for rain, indicating a state of earnest pleading and reliance on Allah.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart, acknowledging that all provision comes from Allah alone. It is recommended to face the Qiblah (direction of prayer) while making dua. In times of drought, the Prophet ﷺ also taught a more elaborate dua, often raising his hands to the sky. The key is earnestness and a deep sense of dependence on Allah's mercy.

Narrated Anas: The people of the desert requested the Prophet ﷺ to invoke Allah for rain, so he invoked Allah for rain for them. While he was invoking, he raised his hands and while he was praying, he turned his cloak. He then prayed two rak'ahs in prayer and delivered a sermon in which he mentioned Allah and praised Him. Then he said, 'O Allah, send down Your rain. O Allah, send down Your mercy. O Allah, grant us abundant rain that will not be detrimental (by causing floods).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1014)
