Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1009

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is particularly recommended during times of drought and when water sources are depleted. It's a direct call to Allah when the need for rain is most pressing, reflecting a deep reliance on Him as the sole provider. Reciting it with sincerity and conviction, especially after the obligatory prayers or during personal supplication, amplifies its effect.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would raise his hands when supplicating for rain, indicating a gesture of earnest pleading. It's also mentioned that he would turn his cloak, a sign of seeking Allah's favor and marking a significant turning point. Recite this simple yet profound dua with humility, acknowledging Allah's power over all things. Facing the Qibla can be a respectful way to direct your supplication, though not strictly mandatory for rain duas.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through dua is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It highlights our dependence on Allah for sustenance and His mercy, which encompasses all creation. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and sincerity of the need. The Quran states, 'And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings preceding His mercy, and We send down from the heaven pure water - That We may give life thereby to a lifeless land and provide it as drink to those We created of livestock and many of mankind.' (Al-Furqan 25:48-49). This connection shows how rain is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and a means of life itself.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Once, while the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday sermon on the pulpit, a man stood up and said: 'O Allah’s Messenger! The camels and the horses have perished.' The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: 'O Allah! Around us and not on us.' Then he said: 'O Allah! On the plateaus and hills, and the bottoms of the valleys, and the places where trees grow.' Anas added: 'It rained for them on that day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day. So the man stood up again and said: 'O Allah’s Messenger! The roads have become impassable due to the rain.' The Prophet (ﷺ) laughed and raised his hands and said: 'O Allah! Around us and not on us.' He said: 'O Allah! On the sand dunes, and on the mountains.' Then the rain stopped, and they went out walking in the sunshine.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1009)
