اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا.
O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna.
When to Read
This dua is specifically recited when there is a need for rain. It's often a communal dua during a drought, led by the Imam in congregation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would make this repeated plea when seeking rain. The connection to debtors arises from the broader Islamic principle that alleviating hardship, including debt, is a highly virtuous act, and seeking Allah's help through dua is always encouraged, especially during times of seeking general mercy like rain.
How to Read
The dua is short and emphatic, repeated three times, signifying earnestness and urgency. It is generally accompanied by raising hands and facing the Qiblah, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making dua for rain. It's important to approach this dua with sincerity, recognizing Allah's power over all things, including the heavens and the earth. Coupled with sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness, this dua can be a means of drawing Allah's mercy not only for rain but for all our needs, including relief from debt.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit is seeking Allah's immediate assistance for a pressing need – rain, which is a source of life and sustenance. The repetition emphasizes the servant's reliance on Allah and the importance of persistent supplication. Islam teaches that alleviating hardship for others is a significant act of worship. While this specific dua is for rain, the spirit of seeking Allah's mercy through heartfelt supplication extends to all forms of relief, including financial burdens. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Whoever removes a worldly hardship from a believer, Allah will remove a hardship of his on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Muslim 2699). Therefore, seeking rain for the community can also be seen as a way of seeking Allah's mercy to alleviate the hardship faced by those in debt.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man entered the Masjid on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, the livestock are dying and the paths are cut off, so pray to Allah for rain." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna." (O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.)
