When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for the elderly to recite regularly, especially during times of reflection or after salah. It encompasses seeking forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being, and provision, all crucial aspects for navigating the later stages of life with contentment and peace. It can be a daily recitation to maintain a strong connection with Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, preferably after completing your obligatory prayers (salah). Raise your hands gently, as is the Sunnah when making dua, and face the Qiblah if possible. Focus on the meaning of each request, truly feeling the need for Allah's support in every aspect of your life. It's recommended to repeat it three times, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often did.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful and concise supplication encapsulates a Muslim's complete dependence on Allah and covers all essential aspects of life. By asking for forgiveness (ghufrān), mercy (raḥmah), guidance (hidāyah), well-being/protection (ʿāfiyah), and provision (rizq), the elderly person seeks Allah's comprehensive care. This ensures they are seeking Allah's pleasure and support for their spiritual and worldly needs, fostering inner peace and contentment, which is especially valuable in old age. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself described this dua as being sufficient for worldly and hereafter needs when asked by a companion, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me what I should ask my Lord.' He replied, 'Ask Allah for ʿāfiyah (well-being).' He repeated this two or three times, and then said on the third or fourth time: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and ʿāfiyah in this life and the Hereafter.' (Sahih Muslim 2697).

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Anas that a man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I want to be the wealthiest of people.' He said: 'O some of my slaves, fear Allah and do what is in your hands, for if a slave of Allah is blessed with ʿāfiyah (well-being) from Allah, that is better for him than being wealthy. Do not wish to be anything other than safe and well.' (The narrator said): 'The man stayed for a while, then came to him again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I want to be the strongest of people.' He said: 'The believer is the strong one.' (Another narrator said): 'He said: 'O some of my slaves, fear Allah and do what is in your hands, for if a slave of Allah is blessed with ʿāfiyah (well-being) from Allah, that is better for him than being wealthy. Do not wish to be anything other than safe and well.' (The narrator said): 'The man stayed for a while, then came to him again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I want to be the most intelligent of people.' He said: 'If you fear Allah, you will be intelligent.' He said: 'I want to be the most virtuous of people.' He said: 'If you are intelligent, you will be virtuous.' He said: 'I want to be the most generous of people.' He said: 'If you are intelligent, you will be generous.' He said: 'I want to be the most patient of people.' He said: 'If you are intelligent, you will be patient.' He said: 'I want to be close to Allah.' He said: 'O some of my slaves, fear Allah and do what is in your hands, for if a slave of Allah is blessed with ʿāfiyah (well-being) from Allah, that is better for him than being wealthy. Do not wish to be anything other than safe and well.' (The narrator said): 'The man stayed for a while, then came to him again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me what I should ask my Lord.' He said: 'Ask Allah for ʿāfiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' (The narrator said): 'Ask Allah for ʿāfiyah in your religion and your worldly life. O Allah, I ask You for ʿāfiyah in my religion, my worldly life, my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my shortcomings and grant me security from whatever I fear.' (The narrator said): 'He said: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and ʿāfiyah, for indeed there is no two things better than them.'
