Dua for a Legacy of Ongoing Charity: For Our Elders and Ourselves

Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1631

When a person dies, their deeds stop except for three things: a continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them.

Idha mata al-insanu inqata'a 'anhu 'amaluhu illa min thalathatin: illa min sadaqatin jariyah, aw 'ilmin yuntafa'u bihi, aw waladin salihin yad'u lahu.

When to Read

This hadith is a powerful reminder for all stages of life, especially as we age or reflect on the lives of our elders. It's a perfect reflection to read when thinking about how to leave a positive impact, how to support our elderly loved ones in leaving such a legacy, and how we ourselves can build one. Consider reading it during times of reflection, when visiting the sick or elderly, or when making plans for your own end-of-life legacy.

How to Read

Reflect on the meaning of this hadith. Understand that the true investment lies in deeds that continue to benefit others after our passing. When thinking about our elders, this contemplation encourages us to support them in establishing such legacies, perhaps by contributing to a sadaqah jariyah project in their name, or by making dua for them to have established one. For ourselves, it serves as a motivator to act now, establishing ongoing acts of charity, spreading beneficial knowledge, or raising righteous children who will remember us in their prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This hadith highlights the immense reward of sadaqah jariyah, knowledge that benefits others, and the prayers of righteous offspring. It shows us how our good deeds can continue to earn rewards even after we have left this world, providing immense solace and a profound sense of purpose. It encourages intergenerational support, where younger generations can actively contribute to the legacy of their elders through dua and by supporting their established charities.
