Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2697

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي، وَعَافِنِي.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, provide for me, and grant me well-being.

Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-rzuqni, wa-'afini.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, often recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his supplications, is perfect for anyone, including our elderly loved ones. It should be recited regularly, perhaps daily, as a way to seek Allah's encompassing care. For elders experiencing or fearing loneliness, making this sincere plea to Allah can bring immense comfort, knowing that His protection and provision are always available, even when human company might be scarce. It can be recited upon waking, after prayers, or at any time one feels the need for closeness with the Creator.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full presence of heart. Raise your hands as you would during prayer (though not strictly necessary for every dua, it is a sunnah for supplication). Imagine Allah's mercy enveloping you as you utter each word. Understand that you are asking for the most essential things: forgiveness, mercy, guidance, sustenance, and health – all of which contribute to a fulfilling life, free from the pangs of isolation because you are connected to the Most High. Repeat it multiple times for added emphasis and to imprint its meaning on your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific hadith doesn't detail benefits for loneliness directly, the comprehensive nature of this dua covers all aspects of a Muslim's well-being. By seeking Allah's forgiveness, mercy, guidance, provision, and health, one is asking for a life that is intrinsically connected to Allah. This connection itself is the greatest antidote to loneliness. When our hearts are filled with Allah's remembrance and His care, the absence of other forms of companionship becomes less impactful. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this extensive supplication, indicating its importance and the vastness of the blessings it encompasses. It is a foundation for seeking all good and protection from all evil, including the spiritual and emotional hardship of isolation.

Narrated Tariq bin Ashyam: I heard the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ say: 'No servant has been given anything better than patience and a sufficient living, and no one is more beloved to me than I am to myself.' Then he said: 'O Allah, forgive me, and have mercy on me, and give me well-being, and grant me sustenance.' (He narrated the wordings of the dua: *Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-'afini, wa-rzuqni*). And I think he said: 'And guide me.' In another narration: 'Seek refuge with Allah from the Hellfire and seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my seeing, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my heart, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my desires.' - Sahih Muslim 2697. The version used in the main entry is a common compilation that includes the core requests for well-being and sustenance, often taught as a foundational supplication.
