اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best way.
Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika
When to Read
This is a profound dua that can be recited at any time, but it's especially beneficial after salah (obligatory prayers) or upon waking. For our elderly brothers and sisters, incorporating it into their daily routine, perhaps after Fajr or Dhuhr prayer, can provide consistent strength and focus for their spiritual acts.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Visualize Allah's grace enabling your worship. Raise your hands as you would when making dua after prayer, or place your right hand over your heart while saying it. The key is consistent remembrance and seeking Allah's assistance in perfecting your connection with Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication is comprehensive. It asks Allah for help in fulfilling the core aspects of our relationship with Him: remembrance (dhikr), gratitude (shukr), and excellent worship (husn 'ibadah). For the elderly, whose physical strength might wane, this dua is a powerful reminder that spiritual strength comes directly from Allah. It allows them to overcome potential difficulties in performing acts of worship, like praying or reading Quran, by seeking divine support. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua, emphasizing its importance.
Source & Authentication
‘Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to them and said: 'What prompts you to sit down?' They said: 'We are sitting for prayer and remembrance of Allah.' He said: 'As for me, I do not do this except for prayer and remembrance. However, I have noticed that you are sitting for prayer and remembrance of Allah after the morning prayer. That is indeed a good habit, but when one of you prays Fajr, he should say: 'O Allah, grant me provision from Your bounty, for indeed You are the Best of those who provide.' Then he should praise Allah and glorify Him with His remembrance, and say: O Allah, help me to remember You, and to thank You, and to worship You in the best way.'
