Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4890

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for Your forgiveness and Your well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your Greatness lest I be swallowed up from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka 'afwaka wa 'afiyataka fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi. Wa a'udhu bi 'adhimatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited daily, especially in the morning, to seek Allah's protection and well-being. For our elderly loved ones facing physical limitations, it's a powerful supplication to ask Allah to grant them ease, health, and comfort in their daily lives, encompassing their spiritual, personal, family, and financial matters. It's particularly relevant when feeling vulnerable or when experiencing discomfort.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It's best recited after the obligatory prayers or at the beginning of the day. Raising your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when making dua, can enhance the feeling of supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking Allah's comprehensive 'afiyah (well-being, protection, safety from all harm). It covers spiritual and worldly aspects, personal health, family, and wealth. By asking for protection from all directions and from being overcome from below, it signifies a plea for complete safety and stability. For the elderly, 'afiyah means comfort in their physical state, relief from pain, and continued strength to perform their acts of worship and daily duties with dignity.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never omitted these supplications: ‘O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your Greatness lest I be swallowed up from beneath me.’
