Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 763

O Allah, place light within my heart, light within my sight, light within my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light before me, light behind me, light above me, light below me, and place abundant light for me.

Allahumma-j'al fi qalbi nooran, wa fi basari nooran, wa fi sam'i nooran, wa 'an yameeni nooran, wa 'an yasari nooran, wa amami nooran, wa khalfi nooran, wa fawqi nooran, wa tahti nooran, waj'al li nooran.

When to Read

This beautiful dua, while not specifically for old age, is incredibly beneficial for anyone seeking clarity and an enhanced connection with the Quran, especially as one ages. Recite it during your daily prayers, particularly after the obligatory salah, or anytime you feel a need for spiritual and mental illumination to better understand and recite the Quran.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, visualizing the light filling your being. Understand that 'light' here encompasses not just physical sight but also spiritual insight and understanding. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often ask Allah for light in various aspects of his life, acknowledging that true clarity comes from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive supplication for inner and outer illumination. It seeks light for the heart (understanding and intention), sight (clear vision to read), hearing (ability to listen and comprehend), and in all directions around us. This can translate to ease in reading the Quran, better comprehension, and a more profound spiritual experience. The emphasis on 'light' is a direct request for guidance and understanding from Allah (SWT), essential for deepening one's connection with His book, especially when physical senses may begin to diminish with age.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to supplicate: 'O Allah, place in my heart light, and in my sight light, and in my hearing light, and in my tongue light, and in my head light, and in my chest light, and place light behind me, and light before me, and place light in my soul, and make me light.' He also said: 'I would ask for light in seven things: in my heart, in my sight, in my hearing, in my bones, in my nerves, in my brain, and in my soul.'
