How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt submission to Allah. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly while making dua, if possible, as this is a Sunnah. Focus on the meaning of each word, truly feeling your need for Allah's mercy and blessings. Whether you are reciting it for yourself or for an elder, do so with a pure intention. It can be recited after prayers, during moments of quiet reflection, or at any time you feel the need to connect with Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
This short yet powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a cornerstone of seeking Allah's complete favor. It covers all aspects of a believer's need: forgiveness for past sins, mercy in this life and the next, guidance to the straight path, protection from harm and ill health (a'afiyah), and sustenance to meet one's needs. For the elderly, this translates to seeking a peaceful passing, freedom from suffering, contentment with their state, and a good end that leads to Jannah. Allah's mercy is vast, and seeking it through His prescribed means is a path to His pleasure.

Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I can ask Allah for." He said: "O Allah, I ask You for "afiyah" (well-being)." I stayed for a while, then I came back and said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I can ask Allah for." He said to me: "O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for 'afiyah' in this life and the Hereafter." (In another narration) He said: "O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, protect me, and provide for me." He said: "You have asked for a good thing."
