O Allah, the stars have set, and the eyes have become calm, and You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes You. O Ever-Living, O Sustainer! Quiet my night and make my eyes sleep.
Allahumma gharatin-nujum wa hada'atil-'uyun, wa anta Hayyun Qayyum la ta'khudhuka sinatun wa la nawm, Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum! Ahdi' laili wa anim 'aini.
When to Read
As we age, the serene comfort of a full night's sleep can often become elusive. For our beloved elders, a good night's sleep can be particularly challenging due to various factors. This beautiful dua, taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, is a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with restlessness at night. It's meant to be recited when sleep is disturbed, or simply as part of your nightly routine, seeking Allah's tranquility. Imagine the peace it brings when recited by a grandparent, entrusting their rest to the One who never sleeps. It’s also suitable for children or anyone facing difficulty in falling asleep.
How to Read
Reciting this dua is more than just uttering words; it's a profound act of **reliance (tawakkul)** on Allah. As you say it, reflect on the magnificent attributes of Allah mentioned: **Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living)**, **Al-Qayyum (The Sustainer)**. Contemplate how He manages all affairs without ever needing sleep or rest, and thus, He is the only One truly capable of granting you or your loved one peaceful slumber. Say it with a sincere heart, understanding its deep meaning, seeking His unique power to calm your night and eyes. You can gently remind an elderly loved one to recite it, or recite it for them with the intention of seeking comfort for them.
Virtues & Benefits
The profound benefit of this dua lies in its direct appeal to Allah's perfect attributes. When we acknowledge Him as **Al-Hayy, Al-Qayyum**, who is untouched by slumber or sleep, we align our hearts with the ultimate source of all peace and rest. For our elders, who may experience physical discomfort, anxiety, or insomnia, reciting this dua can bring: * **Inner Tranquility**: A deep sense of peace knowing that the All-Powerful is watching over them and can grant them rest. * **Relief from Restlessness**: A practical means to seek Allah's intervention for disturbed sleep, replacing worry with remembrance of Him. * **Strengthening of Faith**: A constant reminder of Allah's absolute power and care, reinforcing their **tawhid** (Oneness of Allah) in a challenging aspect of life. * **Sunnah Revival**: Following the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, earning immense reward and connecting to his blessed example.
