A Comprehensive Dua for Elderly Parents: Seeking Gratitude, Righteousness, and Harmony with Adult Children

Old Age & Elderly
QuranAl-Ahqaf 46:15

My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.

Rabbi awzi’ni an ashkura ni’matakal-lati an’amta ‘alayya wa ‘ala walidayya wa an a’mala salihan tardahu wa aslih li fi dhurriyyati, inni tubtu ilayka wa inni minal-Muslimeen.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this comprehensive dua offers profound benefits, especially for elderly parents. Firstly, it fosters **gratitude** for Allah's blessings and for your parents and children, which is a key to contentment. Secondly, by asking for **righteousness for yourself and your offspring**, you invoke Allah's guidance not just for your children's character, but also for the wisdom and patience you need to maintain positive relationships with them. This dua serves as a means of **seeking Allah's intervention** to soften hearts, bridge gaps, and create harmony within your family, even if challenges seem immense. It also brings immense **peace of mind**, knowing you have placed your trust in Allah for the wellbeing and guidance of your beloved children. Furthermore, a parent's sincere dua for their children is among the most accepted prayers, as mentioned in a hadith: "There are three supplications that will undoubtedly be answered: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of a father for his child." (Sunan Ibn Majah 3862 — Hasan). This supplication is a constant reminder for you to strive for good deeds, which in turn sets a righteous example for your children and draws Allah's mercy upon your entire lineage.
