Seeking Tranquility When Leaving Home with a Heavy Heart

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 134

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This profound supplication is ideal for reciting when you step out of your home, especially when facing a journey or task that weighs on your mind. It's for those moments when the path ahead feels uncertain, or when leaving behind loved ones or a familiar space leaves a sense of unease. Reciting it with sincere intention helps transform that heavy heart into one filled with reliance on Allah.

How to Read

Say this dua aloud or inwardly as you are about to leave your dwelling. Stand at the threshold, face the door, and utter these words with full awareness of their meaning. Imagine each word a step on your journey, guided and protected by Allah's grace. The 'Bismillah' anchors you in Allah's presence, 'tawakkaltu 'alallah' is your declaration of complete trust, and 'la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' acknowledges that all strength and ability come from Him alone. This isn't just a phrase; it's an internal shift towards divine support.

Virtues & Benefits

When you recite this, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised a beautiful outcome: 'It will be said to him: 'You are guided, you are taken care of, and you are protected.' So, the devil keeps away from him.' (Sunan Abu Dawud 5095). This means that by uttering this dua, you are actively seeking Allah's divine guidance, sufficiency, and protection. It's a shield against worries and anxieties that often accompany leaving the comfort of home. Your heart feels lighter because you've consciously handed over your concerns to the One who has absolute power over all affairs.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'When a person leaves his house and says: 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', it will be said to him: 'You are guided, you are taken care of, and you are protected.' So, the devil keeps away from him.' And another part of the narration states: 'A devil is told 'How can you get to a person who has been guided, is sufficient (for himself), and is protected?' - Sahih Muslim 134, Sunan Abu Dawud 5095.
