The Talbiyah: Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk – Your Response to Allah

Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithThe Book of Pilgrimage 1184

Here I am, O Allah, Here I am! Here I am, You have no partner, Here I am! Indeed, all praise, grace, and dominion belong to You. You have no partner.

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Inn al-Hamda wa an-Ni'mata Laka wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak

When to Read

The Talbiyah is the central declaration of the pilgrim during Hajj and Umrah. It begins the moment one enters the state of Ihram (the sacred state for pilgrimage) and continues to be recited frequently until the pilgrim begins the Tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) or during the ritual stoning of the pillars. It's a profound moment where you declare your submission and readiness to answer Allah's call.

How to Read

Recite the Talbiyah with sincerity and a heartfelt presence. As you say 'Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk' (Here I am, O Allah, Here I am), visualize yourself standing before Allah, fully present and answering His summons. The repetition is meant to keep your heart connected to this fundamental affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and your willing servitude. Men should recite it in a raised voice, while women recite it at a volume audible to themselves and those near them, as per the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

The Talbiyah is more than just a chant; it's a spiritual declaration. When you say 'Labbayk,' you're affirming your acceptance of Allah's invitation to His House, much like Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did. The phrase 'La Sharika Laka' (You have no partner) is a powerful reassertion of Tawhid, reminding us that our worship, our hopes, and our fears should all be directed to Allah alone. The acknowledgment that 'Al-Hamda wa an-Ni'mata Laka wal-Mulk' (Indeed, all praise, grace, and dominion belong to You) cultivates immense gratitude and humility. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that the Talbiyah is indeed the call of Hajj, and its significance is immense for the pilgrim's journey.

Source & Authentication

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated the Prophet's ﷺ description of Hajj. He said: 'Then he began to say: Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Inn al-Hamda wa an-Ni'mata Laka wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak. (Here I am, O Allah, Here I am! Here I am, You have no partner, Here I am! Indeed, all praise, grace, and dominion belong to You. You have no partner.) He recited this in a loud voice. The companions also recited it and did not recite anything else. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard them and said: 'Whoever says it is pleased with Allah as Lord, Islam as religion, and me as Prophet. This is the saying of Ibraheem (peace be upon him) to whom he said: 'Be pleased, O my Lord.' And it is said that this is the call of Hajj.'
