Seeking Allah's Refuge from Negative Whispers: A Hajj & Umrah Dua

Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the promptings of the devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This dua is especially potent when you feel overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts, doubts, or the general stress that can sometimes accompany the intense spiritual journey of Hajj or Umrah. Recite it when you notice yourself becoming agitated, feeling negativity creep in, or experiencing whispers of doubt about your actions or intentions in the Holy land.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, focusing on the meaning and conveying your plea to Allah. It's best to say it with conviction, raising your hands slightly if you are in a private space, or with a focused heart and mind if you are in a crowd. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible. Repeat it as needed throughout your pilgrimage.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offers a powerful shield against various forms of evil, including the subtle, insidious whispers of Shaytan (Satan). During Hajj and Umrah, the spiritual atmosphere is heightened, making us more susceptible to both good and evil influences. By reciting this dua, we are actively seeking Allah's protection, not just from outward harm, but from the internal battles that can detract from the spiritual benefit of our pilgrimage. It safeguards us from the anger and punishment of Allah due to our shortcomings, the evil actions of other people, and crucially, the tormenting suggestions of the devils, which often aim to distract and dishearten us when we are closest to Allah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he complained about experiencing excessive thoughts and anxieties. The Prophet ﷺ told him, 'Say: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ عِبَادِهِ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ (A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun). And indeed, your Lord is sufficient for you and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3893, classified as Hasan).
