Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Peace be upon you, O best of Allah's creation. Peace be upon you, O leader of the Messengers. Peace be upon you, O beloved of the Lord of the worlds. I bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, advised the Ummah, and called to the path of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel, and you worshipped Allah until certainty came to you. So, may Allah reward you from us with the best of what He has rewarded any Prophet for his Ummah. O Allah, grant him the Wasilah and the Fadilah, and raise him to the Praiseworthy Station which You have promised him.
As-salāmu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh. As-salāmu 'alayka yā khayra khalqillāh. As-salāmu 'alayka yā sayyidal-mursalin. As-salāmu 'alayka yā habība rabbil-'ālamīn. Ash-hadu annaka qad ballaghtar-risālata, wa addaytal-amānata, wa naṣaḥtal-ummah, wa da'awta ilā sabīli rabbika bil-ḥikmati wal-maw'iẓatil-ḥasanah, wa 'abadtallāha ḥattā atākal-yaqīn. Fa-jazākallāhu 'annā afḍala mā jazā nabiyyan 'an ummatih. Allāhumma ātihi al-wasīlata wal-faḍīlata, wab-'ath-hu maqāman maḥmūdan alladhī wa'adtah.
When to Read
This dua is recited when standing before the Noble Grave of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Madinah, after performing the obligatory prayers and visiting the Masjid. It is typically recited after one has greeted the Prophet ﷺ and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
How to Read
Stand respectfully at a reasonable distance from the grave, facing it. It is preferable to stand towards the pillar that is between the Prophet's ﷺ grave and Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him). Avoid pressing oneself against the wall or grave. Recite the salutations and the dua with sincerity, focusing on the meaning and the immense respect due to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is also customary to greet Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) after greeting the Prophet ﷺ.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is an expression of profound love, respect, and gratitude towards our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It acknowledges his monumental role in conveying Islam to us and fulfilling his mission. Reciting this signifies our adherence to his Sunnah and our hope for his intercession (Shafa'ah). The practice itself is a means of drawing closer to Allah by honoring His Messenger. The request for 'Al-Wasilah' and 'Al-Maqam al-Mahmood' is directly from the supplication taught to us.
Source & Authentication
The foundation for greeting the Prophet ﷺ is found in hadith where companions would offer their salutations upon visiting. For example: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, "No one greets me, but Allah restores my soul to me and I reply to his greeting." (Sunan Abi Dawud 2041, Hasan). Furthermore, the practice of invoking blessings and asking for the 'Wasilah' for the Prophet ﷺ is rooted in the Quranic command: "Indeed, Allah confers His blessings upon the Prophet, O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessings upon him and ask [Allah to grant] him peace." (Al-Ahzab 33:56) And the supplication for Al-Wasilah is taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself: Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says. Then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold. Then ask Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, for it is a station in Paradise which befits only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that servant. And whoever asks Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, he will be granted the intercession." (Sahih Muslim 384)
