Peace be upon you, O dwellers of this abode, from among the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, we will join you, if Allah wills. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyaari minal-mu'mineena wal-muslimeen, wa inna in sha' Allahu lalahiqoon, as'alu Allaha lana wa lakumul-'afiyah
When to Read
This dua is recited when visiting the Baqi cemetery (Jannat al-Baqi) in Madinah, or any other Muslim graveyard. It is a practice taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be said when passing by or visiting graves.
How to Read
Approach the graves with solemnity and respect. Recite the dua with a clear voice, directing it towards the inhabitants of the graves. It is recommended to face the direction of the graves while reciting. The intention should be to offer peace and supplication for both the deceased and oneself.
Virtues & Benefits
Visiting graves and reciting this dua is a Sunnah that serves as a profound reminder of the transient nature of this life and the certainty of death. It allows us to remember our deceased loved ones and fellow Muslims, offering them a prayer for mercy and forgiveness. For ourselves, it is a moment of reflection, encouraging us to live our lives in preparation for the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to remind us of our shared journey towards Allah, seeking His mercy and protection for both the living and the dead. It fosters a sense of community within Islam, connecting us across time with those who have passed.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When it was her turn to be with the Prophet ﷺ, she said: 'When he went out towards Baqi (the cemetery of Madinah), he would say: As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyaari minal-mu'mineena wal-muslimeen, wa inna in sha' Allahu lalahiqoon, as'alu Allaha lana wa lakumul-'afiyah. (Peace be upon you, O dwellers of this abode, from among the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, we will join you, if Allah wills. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.)'
