Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to the Jamrah, he went to it until he came to the Jamrah of Aqabah and stood at it, and he threw seven pebbles at it, saying: ‘Allahu Akbar.’ Then he turned and stood at the second Jamrah and threw seven pebbles at it, saying: ‘Allahu Akbar.’ Then he turned and stood at the third Jamrah and threw seven pebbles at it, saying: ‘Allahu Akbar.’ Then he said: ‘O people, have you been commanded with anything like this?’ They said: ‘We do not know.’ He said: ‘But the people of the Book before you were destroyed because when it was time for them to stone the Jamrah, they would stone it. And I have been commanded to stone the Jamrah after the manner of the people of the Book before me, and I have been commanded to do so after the manner of Abraham (peace be upon him).’ He then said: ‘Bismillah, wallahu akbar.’ (Sunan Ibn Majah 2994). This narration, while detailing the Prophet's ﷺ actions and words, highlights the significance of the act and the remembrance of Allah's greatness (Allahu Akbar). The addition of 'Allahumma-j'alhu hajjan mabruran, wa dhanban maghfuran' is a supplication taught by scholars to be recited during this pivotal ritual, capturing the spiritual aspiration of the Hajj.
