"O Allah, forgive those who shaved their heads." They said: "And those who shortened (their hair)?" He said: "O Allah, forgive those who shaved their heads." They said: "And those who shortened (their hair)?" He said: "And those who shortened (their hair)."

Allahumma-ghfir lil-muhalliqeen, qalo: wa lil-muqassireen? Qala: Allahumma-ghfir lil-muhalliqeen, qalo: wa lil-muqassireen? Qala: Wa lil-muqassireen

When to Read

This supplication is recited by the one performing Hajj or Umrah, or by the person shaving/shortening their hair, after completing the pilgrimage rites and before the actual act of shaving or shortening the hair. It is a prayer seeking Allah's forgiveness for oneself and others who participate in this ritual.

How to Read

This dua is a direct supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. While there isn't a specific prescribed dua to recite *while* shaving, the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for forgiveness for those who shave and shorten their hair is a profound instruction. You can recite this dua before shaving your head, asking Allah to forgive you and all those who perform this act. It's also appropriate for the person shaving to make this dua for the individual whose head is being shaved. The intention is to seek Allah's mercy and acceptance of this important ritual within Hajj and Umrah.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is seeking Allah's forgiveness during a significant ritual of Hajj and Umrah. By reciting this, we are following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and acknowledging his concern for the pilgrims. The repeated asking for forgiveness, even when the companions inquired about those who shortened their hair, highlights the immense mercy Allah bestows upon those completing their pilgrimage.

Narrated Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood by the door of his tent and supplicated against some people, and then came to the people and said: "I do not know whether I should be an Ad-monisher or a patient Prophet. You men have gathered and swore an oath..." then he mentioned the story of Hajj. And when he had finished the pilgrimage, he said: "O Allah! Forgive the people who have their heads shaved." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair?" He said: "O Allah! Forgive the people who have their heads shaved." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair?" He said: "And forgive those who shorten their hair." – Sahih al-Bukhari 1732
