Dua for Setting Out on the Journey to Hajj or Umrah

Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in our journey, and in deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the sorrow of seeing [evil], and the bad state of return in wealth and family. And when he returned, he would say these words and add to them: We are returners, repenters, worshippers, for our Lord praise-givers.

Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari, wal-Khaleefatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-mandhari, wa sui'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl. Wa idha raja'a qalahunna wa zadha fihinna: A'ibuna ta'ibuna 'abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited when embarking on the journey for Hajj or Umrah, right before setting out from home or as one begins the travel.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and focus. Understand the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands slightly as you begin the dua, then bring them down after completion, wiping over your face as is the practice after supplication. Make sure you are in a state of purity if possible. The Prophet ﷺ would repeat this dua, so feel free to repeat sections that resonate with you.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses numerous blessings for the traveler. It asks Allah for beneficial deeds, ease in travel, and protection from its difficulties. It acknowledges Allah as the sole Companion and Protector during the journey and for the family left behind. It specifically seeks refuge from hardship, distressing sights, and negative outcomes upon return. The addition upon return acknowledges the completed worship and expresses gratitude, marking a spiritual renewal.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the Prophet (ﷺ) set out on a journey, he would say takbir (Allahu Akbar - Allah is the Greatest) three times, then say: 'Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it ourselves. And to our Lord, we shall indeed return.' (37:12-13). Then he would say: 'O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in our journey, and in deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the sorrow of seeing [evil], and the bad state of return in wealth and family.' When he returned, he would recite these words and add to them: 'We are returners, repenters, worshippers, for our Lord praise-givers.'
