اللَّهُمَّ احْيِنِي مِسْكِيناً وَأَمِتْنِي مِسْكِيناً وَاحْشُرْنِي فِي زُمْرَةِ مَسَاكِينِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
O Allah, let me live as a poor person, and let me die as a poor person, and resurrect me in the gathering of the poor on the Day of Resurrection.
Allahumma ahyini miskinan wa amitni miskinan wahshurni fi zumrati masakin yawm al-qiyamah
When to Read
This dua is particularly poignant when experiencing the physical challenges of Hajj or Umrah, such as thirst during the Tawaf or hunger after prolonged worship. It can be recited at any time during these pilgrimages, especially when reflecting on the hardships faced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and humility. Reflect on the meaning of 'miskin' (poor/needy) not just in terms of wealth, but in one's absolute need for Allah. Understand that true richness is in contentment and reliance upon Allah, and that the Prophet ﷺ himself embodied this state. Focus on seeking Allah's pleasure and closeness rather than worldly comfort, especially during these sacred journeys.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, while seemingly asking for poverty, is a profound expression of humility and reliance on Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite being the most beloved to Allah, made this supplication. It reminds us that true status and success are with Allah, and that the companions of the poor on the Day of Judgment will be the ones closest to the Prophet ﷺ. Reading this during Hajj and Umrah connects us to the spirit of sacrifice and simplicity that underpinned these acts of worship, urging us to remember the Prophet's ﷺ own struggles and to value the blessings we have.

It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Allahumma ahyini miskinan wa amitni miskinan wahshurni fi zumrati masakin yawm al-qiyamah.' He said: 'O Allah, let me live as a poor person, and let me die as a poor person, and resurrect me in the gathering of the poor on the Day of Resurrection.' He said: 'O Allah, do not let me become a transgressor.' They said: 'How can you become a transgressor?' He said: 'Perhaps I would find a man who has something that I do not have, and I would become pleased with it.' [Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2353, Sahih according to Al-Albani]
