Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): The Prophet (peace be upon him) heard a man saying: 'Here I am in response to the Talbiyah on behalf of Shubrumah.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Who is Shubrumah?' He said: 'My brother, or my cousin.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Have you performed the Hajj on behalf of yourself?' He said: 'No.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Begin with yourself, then perform Hajj on behalf of Shubrumah.' (This implies one should perform Hajj for oneself first before performing it for others, and when performing for others, one should make clear intention). Another narration states that when a man said: 'Here I am in response to the Talbiyah on behalf of Shibir.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Have you performed Hajj on behalf of yourself?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then perform Hajj on behalf of yourself, and then on behalf of Shibir.' Another narration states: 'Perform Hajj for yourself first, then for Muhammad and his family, then for Adam and Eve, then for all your brothers and sisters who are Muslims, and then for the person for whom you wish.' A relevant part from a narration by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) mentioned by Al-Baihaqi in Al-Kubro, and also cited in Mirqat al-Mafatih, when a man said 'Labbayk 'an Shibir', the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Have you prayed for yourself first?' He replied, 'No.' He said: 'Make it for yourself first, then for Shibir.' When the man said: 'Labbayk 'an Shubrumah', the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, make it for him and do not make it for anyone else.' (This last part is the specific dua often used when performing Hajj on behalf of someone else).
