Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2087

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, and the goodness of its people, and the goodness of what You have decreed for me to be (inclined) towards. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of its people, and the evil of what You have decreed for me to be (inclined) towards.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma jabaltani 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma jabaltani 'alayh.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his companions to recite this dua upon entering a new settlement. Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when we (the companions) ascended a valley, we would say the Takbir (Allahu Akbar - Allah is the Greatest), and when we descended, we would say SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah). The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught us the supplication for entering a settlement: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ ، وَرَبَّ الأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ ، وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا أَضْلَلْنَ ، وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ ، فَإِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ ، وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا ، وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا ، وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا ، وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَهَرِ اللَّيْلِ ، وَمِنْ سُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْوَلَدِ > **Translation:** 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and what they shade, Lord of the seven earths and what they carry, Lord of the devils and what they lead astray, Lord of the winds and what they scatter. Verily, I ask You for the good of this settlement, and the good of its people, and the good of what is in it. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of its people, and the evil of what is in it. And I seek refuge in You from sleeplessness at night, and from the bad sight (evil consequences) concerning wealth and children.' Sahih Muslim 2087. The dua provided in the main entry is a more concise version, often used for seeking goodness in any situation, and it perfectly applies to choosing a package, as it asks for the good of the situation and its people, and refuge from its evil.
