Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When you come to a town (or country), you should supplicate: O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of its people and its good deeds and seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it. And when you leave it, you should say: O Allah, I ask You for its bounty (reward) and its provisions and I seek refuge in You from its evil.' (This particular dua is for entering, and the specific wording for entering is often derived from the general principle of seeking goodness and mercy). Another related narration, often used upon entering Madinah specifically, is when the Prophet ﷺ used to say upon arriving: 'O Allah, make me love Madinah as much as you made Makkah dear to us, or even more so. O Allah, bless us in our measures (Sa' and Mudd) and make it (Madinah) a means to health for us, and turn its heat towards al-Juhfah.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1891, Sahih Muslim 1389) The dua 'Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik' is a general supplication for entering blessed places and seeking mercy, and it is beautifully applicable here. It aligns with the spirit of seeking Allah's grace upon entering the Prophet's city.
