Dua for Embracing Ihram: Purity of Heart and Humility

Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 2807

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا حَجَّةً لَا رِيَاءَ فِيهَا وَلَا سُمْعَةَ

O Allah, make it a Hajj wherein there is no showing off and no seeking of fame.

Allahumma-jalha hajatan la riya'a fiha wa la sum'ah

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when entering the state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah. It can be recited as you don your Ihram garments, signifying your intention to purify your actions and intentions for the sacred journey. Recite it before making your Niyyah (intention) for Hajj or Umrah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heart ready to submit. Focus on the meaning: acknowledging that the pilgrimage is for Allah alone, free from any desire for worldly recognition. As you say it, visualize yourself shedding ego and seeking Allah's pleasure. This is a personal supplication to imbue your journey with genuine spiritual purpose.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication directly addresses the spiritual essence of Hajj and Umrah. By asking Allah to purify the intention from riya' (showing off) and sum'ah (seeking fame), we align our actions with the true purpose of worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of sincere intentions, stating, 'Indeed, actions are by intentions, and for every person is what they intended.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1). This dua helps ensure that the immense effort and spiritual investment in Hajj or Umrah are accepted by Allah, earning us His pleasure and a truly transformative experience, rather than mere ritual devoid of spiritual substance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O people, perform Hajj and do not show off and do not seek fame.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 2807. Graded Hasan by Darussalam).
