Dua for Comfort and Patience When Feeling Homesick During Hajj & Umrah

Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3802

O Allah, I ask You for patience and contentment with Your decree, and love for meeting You, and longing to meet You, and that You help me in remembering You, and thanking You, and worshipping You in the best manner.

Allahumma inni as'aluk as-sabra war-rida 'an qada'ik, wal-hubba liqa'ik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ik, wa an tu'inani 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when the overwhelming emotions of Hajj or Umrah, combined with being away from family and familiar surroundings, lead to feelings of homesickness. Recite it during the quiet moments of reflection, perhaps after prayers, in your accommodation, or while in Rawdah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, raising your hands slightly as you do for other personal supplications. Imagine the love and longing for Allah, which can help shift your focus from worldly attachments to the ultimate spiritual purpose of your journey. Repeating it can reinforce its meaning and its effect on your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication asks Allah for several key qualities vital for enduring any hardship and for spiritual growth. Asking for patience ('sabr') and contentment ('rida') with His divine plan helps us accept challenges without complaint. The request for love and longing to meet Allah ('hubb liqa'ik' and 'shawq ila liqa'ik') elevates our spiritual aspiration, turning our gaze towards the Hereafter. Crucially, it asks for assistance in remembering Allah, being grateful, and worshipping Him perfectly, which are the very aims of this blessed journey, helping to reframe homesickness as an opportunity for deeper connection.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الصَّبْرَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ الرِّضَا عَنْ قَضَائِكَ، وَالتَّوَاضُعَ عِنْدَ الرَّخَاءِ، وَالشَّوْقَ إِلَى لِقَائِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الضَّلالِ فِي الرَّخَاءِ وَالشِّدَّةِ. 'O Allah, I ask You for patience, and I ask You for contentment with Your decree, and humility in times of ease, and longing to meet You, and I seek refuge in You from misguidance in times of ease and hardship.' (Some versions include: and love for meeting You, and that You help me in remembering You, and thanking You, and worshipping You in the best manner.)
