Dua for a Successful Departure from Ihram After Umrah

Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1908

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

When to Read

This dua is ideally recited at the conclusion of an act of worship, such as after completing the Tawaf and Sa'i of Umrah, or at the end of any gathering. When departing from the state of Ihram after Umrah, after shaving or trimming the hair, this supplication marks a beautiful closing to the spiritual journey, acknowledging Allah's perfection and seeking His acceptance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection. Understand the meaning of each phrase: glorifying Allah, testifying to His oneness, and seeking His forgiveness and acceptance of your repentance. It's a comprehensive closing supplication, suitable for acknowledging any shortcomings and reaffirming your faith.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a general closing supplication for gatherings and acts of worship. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that whenever the Prophet ﷺ sat for a long time, prayed, or recited the Quran, he would always conclude with these words. This indicates its immense value in sealing an act with Allah's remembrance and seeking His forgiveness for any unintentional flaws or excesses in our worship. For those departing from Ihram, it's a perfect way to conclude the sacred state, acknowledging the completion of rituals with humility and gratitude, seeking Allah's ultimate acceptance of the Umrah.

Source & Authentication

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never sat down, got up, or went anywhere, except he concluded his time with some words." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what words do you conclude with?" He said: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance." (So I said to him): "O Messenger of Allah, you say these words?" He said: "Yes. If anyone speaks anything, it will be a stain upon him, and if he says them, they will be an expiation for whatever was in the gathering." This hadith is found in Sunan An-Nasa'i (1335) and graded Sahih by Al-Albani. Similar narrations are in Sunan Abi Dawud (1908) and Jami' At-Tirmidhi (3436), with Tirmidhi stating it is Hasan Gharib.
